Pupils are learning to swim

LETTER

Re: “No swimming lessons in schools”, September 2 story.

Swim For Life Tairawhiti has been providing lessons to around 28 schools in the Tairawhiti/East Coast region for over four years. SFLT has grown considerably during this time — providing 10 lessons per year to over 3000 students. These classes are run by qualified instructors from both Comet Swimming Club and Martin Swim School.

It is an essential resource for our region with many schools asking for extra professional development for their teachers. Our aim is always to have no drownings in our region, to encourage children and their whanau to have a love for water, and to follow the many different aquatic pathways that are available in our area.

We will continue our beneficial and life-saving work within our schools/community. Hopefully the local health board can recognise the great work that is going on around them within our local schools.
