The “final” reunion for the foundation students of Lytton High School, 1961, has been so successful, they’re going to do it again.

Organiser Bernie Priestley said 41 former students and 13 partners attended, including one couple who flew from Perth.

Others flew from Invercargill or travelled from Pelorus Sound, Hawke’s Bay, Horowhenua and Palmerston North resulting in long car journeys via the Bay of Plenty.

Plans to meet at the spot where the first assembly was held in 1961 were cancelled because of bad weather, but Lytton principal Wiremu Elliott welcomed the former students in the library.

“His delight in having us there was obvious,” said Mr Priestley.

Former student Sheryl McGrory (nee Irving) gave a moving memorial service honouring former school friends who have died.

Dave Pardoe and Adrienne Hill (nee Osler) entertained their fellow former students with humour and memories of yesteryear before the group toured the grounds and classrooms of a  much changed school.

When Mr Priestley first discussed the reunion with The Herald six weeks ago, he said it would definitely be the last one.

“We are aware of many who wish to have more reunions,’ said Mr Priestley. Possible locations include Cambridge, again, or Hawke’s Bay, when the roads are open.

He is keen to find more Lytton High School students from 1961.
