Flaugere, Seymour skip fours to open glory at Gisborne’s Poverty Bay Bowling Club

By Karen Pinn

Kathryn Flaugere skipped junior players Anna Colvin, Jenny Amor and Cheryl Tamanui to victory in Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s open fours women’s championship.

It took Flaugere’s last bowl in an extra end to keep their hopes alive against the team of Ora Peipi (skip), Jean Patterson, Ngawai Turipa and Marilyn Knowles.

That win meant they were able to face the Peipi four again in the final.

Peipi’s team took an early 4-0 lead, but then a seesaw battle for dominance ensued. The score was 8-8 by the seventh end, then Flaugere’s team established a buffer by gaining consecutive scores of four and two.

Peipi’s team narrowed the gap to two points going into the final end. In a thrilling conclusion, Colvin secured a crucial shot, and Flaugere made a decisive play to seal victory, 17-13.

It was a first championship title for Amor and Tamanui.

Two teams contested the men’s club championship open fours.

The crew of BJ Seymour (skip), Jeff Davis, Dawson Owen and Craig Smith were tested by Barry Denham (s), Steve Phillips, Bruce Gledhill and Colin Evans in the first game, but the second game was one-way traffic, Seymour’s team winning 22-1.
