Thousands of dead crayfish and pāua have washed up on a remote East Coast beach leaving locals distraught as they discover the depths of environmental damage wreaked by ex-tropical Cyclone Hale.

It comes as community anger rises over wider damage in the region from the storm linked to land use, with the Environmental Defence Society calling for a Commission of Inquiry into forestry practices.
