A host of golden daffodils

Mahanga farmer Merv Goodley with a bucket of daffodils, picked on a perfect day exactly a week before the official Daffodil Day yesterday. He was joined for the first pick by volunteers from the Gisborne East Coast Cancer Society, who were out and about yesterday with the flowers and daffodil-related merchandise in the service’s major fundraiser of the year.

Students Tipiana Hayne (left) and Rivyenne Wharehinga (right) were in the main street yesterday collecting for Daffodil Day, the Cancer Society’s major fundraiser for the year. They joined Erin Jones and Cheryl Amor, who had a sales table set up in town with Cancer Society merchandise, as well as the signature yellow blooms which provided a bright spot on a grey day. Volunteers picked around 2500 stems but at least one more pick was scheduled before Daffodil Day yesterday.
