The popularity of a hunter training course run by the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association has prompted it to organise another in Gisborne, starting next month.
The NZDA hunter education programme, titled HUNTS, will be delivered over four weekends by qualified NZDA HUNTS instructors.
The course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to hunt safely, ethically and successfully, NZDA instructor Mike Spray says.
Over the four weekends, HUNTS trainees will learn about ethics and regulations, outdoor equipment for hunting, campcraft, weather forecasting and backcountry travel, including river safety and navigation, as well as gaining knowledge of survival and dealing with emergencies.
The trainees will spend a day on the shooting range learning about marksmanship, shooting techniques, sighting in a firearm and firearm maintenance.
The course culminates with a two-night hunting trip to learn and experience hunting techniques and processing game meat for the table.
Trainees will also receive sponsor products.
