State Highway 2 reopened after second highway slip near Ōpōtiki

The bench at the foot of the slip was cleared on Monday night and overnight rain didn’t bring down more material. Work to remove remaining debris continued on Tuesday with two radio-connected spotters observing the slip face for safety. Geotechnical engineers also assessed the cliff face.

State Highway 2 north was reopened to all traffic north of Ōpōtiki on Tuesday afternoon, albeit with a reduced speed limit.

Contractors had been busy since Monday clearing a second big slip that came down at Waiotahe Beach, at the same site as a recent slip which shut the highway at the location for a week.
