Gisborne’s Lion Foundation Coastguard crew were put on standby on Tuesday night after two kayakers were seen to be having problems about 500 metres of Turihaua Beach.
The police were contacted at around 6pm and they in turn alerted the Coastguard.
A Coastguard spokesman said the kayakers were eventually able to make their own way back to shore at Pouawa.
