Safety concerns mount as truck slides off Parikanapa Road

1 min read

The risks associated with using the Parikanapa Road as an alternative to the Tiniroto Road were highlighted on Friday when this metal truck slewed off the road. A resident in that area who sent in the photographs said the truck and trailer went extremely close to going down the bank. Tiniroto Road remains closed at the Hangaroa Bluffs due to the instabiIity of the rock face above it. Residents in that area have been forced to travel via Wairoa to Gisborne, or to use the  Parikanapa Road, which local residents feel is still in a dangerous state.

There was a report of another crash on the road on the same day, with two trucks colliding, fortunately with no injuries.

GDC should just reopen the Tiniroto Road at Hangaroa Bluffs. Put up signage stating the risks of rockfall and motorists use the road at their peril, and GDC accept no liability for motorists' actions. The bluffs at Hangaroa have been dodgy for many years and it is what it is. Motorists need to drive to conditions and report any slip material to GDC to enable the road contractors to remedy the problem. Better still if the roadman still lived in the area and was sufficiently resourced - ie small grader and reasonable-sized sweeper maintenance truck - they could keep the area tidy more efficiently . . .
