2 min read

Tuatini Marae from Tokomaru Bay were the overall winners of the Ngāti Porou Inter Marae Sports Festival at Whakarua Park in Ruatōria last Friday.

Known as Pā Wars, the event drew a big crowd as usual with an estimated 1500 attending from 25 teams representing marae across the East Coast.

Tuatini collected multiple top three placings over the various events including victories in the mixed touch, pickleball and team parade.

Hinerupe from Te Araroa were runners-up and Whareponga southeast of Ruatōria were third.

“What an incredible day of competition, kotahitanga, and celebration,” organisers said on social media.

“A huge mihi to all the marae, volunteers, sponsors, and whānau who came together to make this day a success.

“Your dedication and hard work are what make Pā Wars possible year after year.

“Let’s continue to strengthen our bonds, celebrate our mātauranga, and keep the wairua alive for next year.“

More than 30 events took place on the day, including chess, 100m sprints, karaoke, line dancing, tug of war, horse sports and pickleball.
