Storm recovery work across Tairāwhiti still going strong

2 min read

A geotechnical assessment has cleared Tiniroto Rd at the Hangaroa Bluffs and Gisborne District Council has reopened the road.

The council reported that contractors had completed flood damage work at the site.

As of today, more than 20 rural roads across the district were closed or affected by last week’s storm.

“A big thanks to our teams out on the road network working hard to reopen roads,” the council said.

“Check our website for updates,” it said.

The council has thanked the community for being careful with water use over the weekend.

It gave the city reservoirs time to recover fully after a break in a pipe at Waingake last week.

Repairs were completed on Thursday night.

Work continues on the district’s sports grounds after the storm, including cleaning up tree damage.

Watson Park, Waihirere Domain and Whataupoko Reserve remained closed today.

“The aim is to complete all the work at Watson Park before the weekend to avoid sports interruptions,” the council said.

“The assessment of Whataupoko Reserve will be done this week to hopefully have it open for the weekend and, in Waihirere Domain, the waterfall track is still closed as multiple trees are down.

“We ask the public to please stay away from taped-off areas.

“The council’s priority, in addition to urgent work, is to undertake assessments to standing trees located in high-use areas to ensure safety for the public.”

The district council wants to hear from people whose properties were flooded last week.

“Tell us about any flooding on your residential property, especially when we have heavy rain,” the council said.

“If you’re on a hilly section, please check your land and contact us if you notice any cracks, creaking noises, doors sticking in your home or retaining walls leaning.

“Call us on 800 653 800 If you have any issues with your septic tank, and please contact a registered drainlayer.

“Staff are assessing the wood debris on our city beaches and we’ll have more information later this week on what we’re going to do.”

Firstlight Network today responded to a fault that was affecting 477 customers in the Ruatōria/Te Araroa area.

The network worked to supply power via a generator.

Poroporo Rd residents were on a generator and power was expected back on this afternoon.

To report an outage, call Firstlight 24/7 on the faults line number: 0800 206 207.
