Six in car that plunged into Waioeka River

Two adults injured when their stationwagon left SH2 in the Waioeka Gorge on Sunday evening were winched from the river bank by rescue helicopters, and flown to hospital in the Bay of Plenty with moderate injuries. A stationwagon with two adults and four children inside plunged off State Highway 2 into the Waioeka River on Sunday night.

Firefighters said the occupants were extremely lucky the vehicle landed on its wheels in the river.

Emergency services were notified about the crash at around 7.20pm that evening.
