Crossing the finish line

Gisborne Intermediate School’s Sylvia Allen on her way to second among 128 other Year 8 female athletes in the 3 km cross country event of the AIMS Games on Sunday.

She crossed the line in 11 minutes, 8.74 seconds — 11 and a half seconds behind Chisnallwood Intermediate’s Tayla Cox.

Gisborne has a long tradition of sending school teams to compete at the Games including Ilminster Intermediate, Kaiti School, Waikirikiri, Tolaga Bay Area School and Te Kura Kaupapa Ngā Uri a Māui.

The AIMS Games were created in 2004 and are held annually in Tauranga.

The Games have grown from 760 competitors from 17 schools to this year’s edition featuring 11,733 pupils representing  374 schools across 25 sporting codes ranging from rugby, hip-hop dance, rock climbing to BMX and basketball.
