Gisborne swimmers finish the year in style at HBPB champs

2 min read

Gisborne’s Enterprise Swim Team and Comet Swimming Club came away from the Hawke’s Bay/ Poverty Bay swimming championships at Kiwa Pools with a stack of medals.

Enterprise had their biggest team in some time at the regional champs.

“We had 48 swimmers, with many at their first meet of this calibre, and they did an outstanding job,” head coach Matt Martin said.

“First-timers Peyton Dear, Zoe Gardner, Chloe Mcphail, Chloe Menzies, Emma Menzies, Irelyn Purnell, Beauden Spriggs, Benji Thorpe and Maise Thorpe all swam fantastically well, and we look forward to the progress of our entire team in coming years.

“With great numbers in our training squads helping, these athletes challenge themselves against each other weekly.

“The future for them and their progress is exciting.”

The Comet squad also had a strong weekend, collecting 24 medals.

The club’s swimmers enjoyed success across the age groups.

The boys’ open relay won silver, AJ Kinsella won the 400m and 800m freestyle finals in his age group and Celia Willougby took gold in her age group of the 100 butterfly.

“They were the standouts of a very good meet for Comet,” head coach Glenn Hamblyn said.

“The relay team of Max Phillips/Mako Fukushima-Hall/Te Maumahara Hape and Calvin Braybrook came in second to the Sundevils of Hawke’s Bay by point-48 seconds, which was a great result for them.”
