Miriam steps up in the Capital

It was mission accomplished for Miriam Cornfeld when she competed in a competition at the Capital Gymnastics Club in Wellington late last month.

Gisborne Gymnastics Club member Cornfeld travelled to Wellington with her family to gain a qualification score that would move her from Step 6 to Step 7.

Cornfeld was in great form and performed her routines beautifully. She won gold in the Step 6 event and had apparatus wins on the uneven bars and beam, and was fifth on floor. She has qualified for the next step and will continue learning harder skills to prepare for the higher standard required.

A Mid-Island Gymsports competition was held in Rotorua on the same two days as the Capital Gymnastics event.

Most of the juniors from the Gisborne club competed in the Rotorua event.

Due to the large number of competitors,  the competition for steps 1, 2 and 3 had to be split into two events each to ensure the allotted time of three hours per step could be achieved.

Step 1 results —

India Bonnie Forde: Silver overall; first on beam; second on vault, uneven bars and floor.

Sage Alexander: Sixth overall; second on vault; fourth on beam.

Elenor Snodgrass: Sixth on vault and beam.

Emmie Fitzharris-Stevens: Fourth on beam.

Zara Green: Fifth on uneven bars.

Olive Moleta: Eighth on beam.

Gisborne team of India Bonnie Forde, Emmie Fitzharris-Stevens, Sage Alexander and Zara Green won bronze.

Step 2 results —

Sage Thorpe: Silver in under-9 division; first on vault and floor; third on uneven bars.

Terina Wilson: Gold in 10yrs and over division; first on uneven bars, beam and floor; sixth on vault.

Step 3 results —

India Gill: Bronze overall; first on floor; second on beam.

Yi Xuan Chan: Sixth on vault.

Monroe Brouwer: Fourth overall; second on floor; fourth on beam; sixth on uneven bars.

Lea O’Reilly: Fifth on uneven bars.

Ella Ryan: Third on floor and vault.

Zeva Kinnaird: Fourth on vault; fifth on floor.

The Gisborne team of India Gill, Lea O’Reilly, Monroe Brouwer and Yi Xuan Chan won bronze.

Step 4 results —

Lizelle Duckworth: Seventh overall; fourth on vault; fifth on uneven bars.
