Frantic efforts to free the driver of an excavator that tipped over in the upper reaches of the Waimatā River on Monday morning were tragically unsuccessful.
The cab of the 30-tonne digger was submerged when the machine rolled while it was working in the river.
The body of the excavator operator was recovered Monday night.
