1 min read

Hawke’s Bay’s Bob Bruce and his dog Ruby won the J and T Hickey Charity sheep dog trials championship at the Riding Club for the Disabled on Saturday, with Gisborne’s Toni Blundell close behind.

Bruce and Ruby finished the Top 10 final run-off with a score of 95.5 points.

They were just ahead of Blundell and her dog Kaz on 94.5.

Sheena Martin and Stretch from Wairoa were third on 91.5.

“The run-off was pretty good, with nine out of the 10 combinations able to finish,” dog trials commentator Ross Buscke said.

“The event went really well and everybody helped out to run it. Overall, it was a very good dog trial.”

The sheep came from Papatu Station at Manutūke.

The annual championship attracted dogs from all the over the North Island and about 140 runs were needed in qualifying to get through to Saturday’s Top 10 final.

The trial supports a range of charities – Idea Services Tairāwhiti, CCS Disability Action, Riding for the Disabled and the Eastland Rescue Helicopter Trust.
