Tax cuts for landlords

1 min read

It has now become clear that landlords will receive over $6000 a year in tax cuts for every house they rent out. Some landlords own over 200 houses.
I know they provide housing for people and some people prefer to rent. However, I am less than happy about paying them this huge amount of taxpayers’ money when I see economists are pointing out that the same amount of money will be reduced from disability, sickness and other benefits by not increasing them in line with wage gains if National gets in.
If these same disadvantaged could be guaranteed a rent drop, I would feel better. But National admits it won’t. They say it may stop rents increasing so much.
Robbing the very poor to generate capital gains for the already well off is not what you expect in New Zealand.
Shameful, really.

Those wretched landlords. How dare they be rewarded for providing 510,000 houses to less-well-off Kiwis. That’s 85% of rental housing in NZ. Imagine if Kiwi mum and dads no longer wanted to be in the rental market. Where are renters going to live? Be careful what you wish for. Or in this case - vote for!
