Goodbye Olympics, hello Kiwa Pools

1 min read

The Gisborne Olympic Pool complex will close its doors for the final time at 6pm on Sunday ahead of the opening of the new Kiwa Pools complex at the start of next month.

“The time’s come to say goodbye to the Olympic Pools this weekend,” the council said on Facebook.

“As a last hoorah to the iconic Olympics, there’ll be a free sausage sizzle between 11am  and 3pm on Saturday and Sunday and free entry to the pool on Sunday.

“Everyone’s welcome! Come and swim your final lengths or do your final splash.”

On Monday at 10.30am there will be a final karakia led by mana whenua at the Olympic Pool complex.

The new Kiwa Pools complex opens with an action-packed weekend for the whole family on September 2.

The public have been invited to be in to win prizes by sharing their memories, posting photos of their favourite Olympic Pool  moments.

The Kiwa Pools build included Government funding of $40 million.

They were designed in partnership with Ngāi Tāwhiri hapū and Gisborne District Council and built by Apollo Projects Ltd.

“Kiwa Pools is a community aquatic recreation facility, not an event-based facility,” the council said.

“We can still host swimming competitions, water polo, canoe polo, and national surf lifesaving events.”

Kiwa Pools has three indoor pools, a café, an event room for hire, a movie screen, a hydrotherapy suite, and more.

“There’s something for everyone,” the council said.

At the current Olympic Pool location the dive pool, 33m outdoor pool, toddlers’ pool, hydro slide, and picnic areas will all be open over summer, under the new Kiwa Pools name.

“The name Kiwa Pools has been gifted to the complex by partners Ngāi Tāwhiri hapū, reflecting the history and traditions of the people of Tūranganui-a-Kiwa and the story of the land where the complex is located.”
